Internships & Fellowships

The Waterfront Commission hosts year-round law school internship & fellowship programs. We also host pre-law undergraduate students from Cornell University, School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR). Supervised by mentoring attorneys, interns draft reports, conduct legal research, participate in depositions, attend educational lectures, and support administrative hearings of port workers who may have associated with organized crime figures, committed crimes, or otherwise violated waterfront labor laws.

If you are interested in an internship, contact your school’s career counselor and email [email protected] for information about when and how to apply.

Testimonials:

“I was very happy with the internship.... It covers criminal, civil, maritime, and governmental laws. It allows you to also develop a method of research that you can carry with you to other internships. I believe that it is also an engaging internship where you can connect with other students from local law schools that will allow you to make networking connections that will follow you.

          - Dina Khedr (Brooklyn Law School ’24)

“I was more than happy with the internship. I was able to work on a variety of interesting assignments and issues…. The best aspect was getting to work in such a fun and supportive environment. I learned a ton both about the law and being a good worker in general.”

          - James Doheny (St. John’s School of Law ’25)

“I really appreciated the encouraging and safe environment which made me feel comfortable to ask questions and grow…. The variety of activities along with a positive and fun learning environment made this internship very special.”

          - Kamala Karuppiah (Cornell University, School of Industrial and Labor Relations ’26)

“The legal research I conducted during my time here was both challenging and rewarding …. I also enjoyed meeting and learning from so many knowledgeable professionals in the legal field. “I’ve grown a lot this summer in ways I did not expect. I’m more excited than ever to become a lawyer …. Also, I never expected to smile and laugh as much as I did this summer.”

          - Sarah Dodge (CUNY School of Law ’26)

“I would definitely recommend this internship to classmates. It was super fun, I learned a ton, … and just generally had a good time. I would recommend it because it helps teach the fundamentals of what it means to be a lawyer (investigations, research, writing, etc.) through the lens of a super niche, interesting subject.”

          - Lyndsey Garbee (NYU School of Law ’26)

“I feel like I learned … and grew a lot both professionally and personally at this internship. I will recommend this experience to anyone looking to gain legal experience, make new friends, and laugh a lot.”

          - Sarah Conley (NYU School of Law ’26)

“I had a great experience working at the Commission. Naturally, I enjoy writing arguments after conducting research and going through depositions and discovery…. Most people I talk to are for more interested about my experience at the Waterfront Commission than my other work experiences – and I totally understand why.”

          - Adrian Toral (Pace School of Law ’26)
