Daily Order Postings

Your guide to deep-sea longshore jobs on the waterfront.
Introduction

If you are registered as a deep-sea longshore worker or checker, you’ve come to the right place to learn about daily hiring orders and gang/list openings.

How Does it Work?

As a deep-sea longshore worker or checker, you may make yourself available for employment every day by calling the Telecommunications Hiring Employment Information Center (THEIC) between the hours of 4:00p.m. and 8:00p.m., Monday through Saturday.  The Shipping Association of New York and New Jersey call-in number is (201) 508-9191.

If you do not receive an order during the 4:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. call-in, you will automatically be made available for fill-in orders the following day.  You should be available between the hours of 8:00a.m. and 9:30a.m.  the following day to receive a telephonic order.  You are not required to be available for a telephonic order on Sunday.

Call to Get Credit

Whether or not you expect to work on a given day, make sure to call the THEIC anyway so that you can receive work credit.  Work credit is important! Waterfront Commission Regulation 8.1 requires that you work or make yourself available for work at least 90 days in each half-calendar year, distributed at least 15 days in 5 out of the 6 months.

If you do not make yourself available for work, you may be decasualized (removed from the waterfront) unless you have an illness or other good cause for missing work.  Please note that outside employment is NOT good cause for missing the work requirements.  Don’t risk your career by failing to make yourself available for work.

Modification of Work Requirements

Occasionally, work requirements are reduced for those who are on lists at cruise terminals.   For more information, please visit the Resolution page or contact our office.

Please note that this site is for informational purposes. If you are a deep-sea longshore worker or checker, you must still telephone the THEIC to properly receive work credit. Also, changes in the hiring sometimes occurs. If your orders differ on this site from the orders given by a dispatcher, follow the dispatcher’s order.
